Aisha Yesufu, a prominent member of the Labour Party's 2023 presidential campaign team, has stated that Peter Obi, the party’s candidate in the last general election, did not create the Obidient movement. Yesufu explained that the Obidient movement emerged as a result of the collective anger following the EndSARS protests.

Origins of the Obidient Movement

Yesufu emphasized that the movement was born out of the widespread discontent among Nigerian youths due to the EndSARS killings. This collective frustration drove many to become more politically active, ultimately leading to the formation of the Obidient movement, with Peter Obi as a key beneficiary.

Yesufu's Statement on Social Media

In a post on X, Yesufu wrote: "Nobody created the Obidient movement. After the #EndSARS killings by the APC government, many became interested in politics since they were mocked and told to vote for those who killed the protesters. There was a collective anger to vote out APC. Peter Obi was a beneficiary of that collective anger of the people."

Support for Peter Obi

Yesufu highlighted that when Peter Obi announced his intention to run for the presidency, he garnered support from many who shared the collective anger against the APC. This support group was later named the Obidient movement, following the Nigerian custom of naming supporters after the candidates they endorse. She further explained, "There was already a movement before the name Obidient was coined."

Conclusion

Aisha Yesufu's clarification underscores that the Obidient movement was not a creation of Peter Obi but rather a result of the youth's reaction to political and social injustices. Peter Obi's presidential run channeled this collective anger into a significant political force, demonstrating the power of grassroots movements in shaping political landscapes.
