US President, Joe Biden with Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky |
US President Joe Biden is set to meet with
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky twice in the coming week: first in
Normandy, France, and then at the G7 summit in Italy, to discuss Ukraine's
ongoing conflict with Russia, the White House announced on Tuesday.
These meetings follow criticism Biden faced
for opting to skip an upcoming Ukrainian peace summit in Switzerland to attend
an election fundraiser featuring Hollywood stars George Clooney and Julia
Roberts.
While in Normandy for the 80th anniversary
of the World War II D-Day landings, Biden will meet Zelensky to discuss the
current situation in Ukraine and ways to deepen US support, according to
National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.
Biden will have another meeting with
Zelensky at the G7 summit in Bari, Italy, from June 13-15. The summit will
focus on utilizing frozen Russian funds to support Ukraine's war effort.
“In the course of a little more than a
week, the president will have two substantive engagements with President
Zelensky,” Sullivan noted.
Although Biden will not attend the Ukraine summit in Lucerne, Switzerland, immediately following the G7, US Vice President Kamala Harris and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will represent the US at the event.
