Cristiano Ronaldo |
Arsenal legend Paul Merson has advised
Portugal manager Roberto Martinez to bench captain Cristiano Ronaldo for the
first two games of Euro 2024. Merson suggests that Martinez should focus on
securing qualification to the knockout stages before considering playing the
Al-Nassr forward in the final group match.
Euro 2024 is set to kick off this Friday in
Germany. Portugal finds itself in Group F, competing against Turkey, the Czech
Republic, and Georgia.
Discussing Portugal’s prospects in the
tournament, Merson told Sportskeeda: "Portugal is an aging team but they
have a lot of experience within the squad. Ronaldo remains their captain and is
still scoring goals in Saudi Arabia, but I think they will assess his condition
during the camp and make a decision on his selection."
"I would personally leave him out of
the first two games to secure qualification and then bring him back for the
final encounter," Merson added.
As Euro 2024 approaches, all eyes will be on Martinez's strategic decisions and how Portugal navigates the group stage, potentially without their star player for the initial matches.
