In an electrifying Euro 2024 opener for Turkey against Georgia, Arda Guler made history by breaking a long-standing record held by Cristiano Ronaldo. The match, held at Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday, saw Guler score the leading goal for Turkey in their Group F encounter.
Guler's Moment of Brilliance
Guler's goal was a masterpiece. Taking
possession along the right side of the midfield, he skillfully shifted to his
left and launched a left-footed curler that found the back of the net. The
stunning goal left the debutant Georgia team in shock and drew comparisons to
his memorable strike against Wales in a Euro 2024 qualifying game, which made
him Turkey's youngest goalscorer at that time.
Record-Breaking Feat
With his goal against Georgia, Guler set a
new record, becoming the youngest player to score on debut in the European
Championship at 19 years and 114 days old. This remarkable achievement
surpasses Cristiano Ronaldo's record set in 2004, when Ronaldo scored at 19
years and 128 days old.
A Rising Star from Turkey
Arda Guler's journey to stardom began in
Ankara, Turkey's capital, and continued in Istanbul, the country's largest
city. At the age of nine, he joined the academy of local Ankara club
Gençlerbirliği, where his exceptional talent quickly caught the eye of scouts
from Istanbul's top clubs.
In 2019, just before turning 14, Guler made
a significant move to Fenerbahçe. His time at the club was marked by notable
achievements, including helping Fenerbahçe win the Turkish Cup in 2023 and
earning the Player of the Match title in the final.
Guler's Transition to Real Madrid
Guler's impressive performances caught the attention of European giants, leading to his transfer to Real Madrid in 2023. Since joining the Spanish club, he has continued to shine, scoring six goals in 12 appearances.
