President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated that civil servants who relocated abroad while still drawing salaries without formally resigning must refund the wages they received during that period.

Addressing the Issue at the 2024 Civil Service Award and Gala Night

Speaking at the 2024 Civil Service Award and Gala Night, the culmination of the week-long Civil Service Week held at the Abuja Continental Hotel, Tinubu emphasized the need for accountability within the civil service. The President's remarks came after revelations by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation during a media parley. It was disclosed that some employees had relocated abroad while still receiving salaries without resigning properly.

Tinubu's Call for Accountability

Tinubu stressed the importance of ensuring those responsible for this misconduct are held accountable. “We must ensure those responsible are held accountable and restitution is made,” he stated. The President insisted that the culprits must refund the money they fraudulently collected, and their supervisors and department heads must also be punished for aiding and abetting the fraud.

Upholding Integrity in the Civil Service

“The civil service cannot just be a workplace where ‘anything is possible,’ where workers violate rules without fear of punishment or repercussions,” Tinubu noted. He highlighted the critical role of the civil service as the bedrock and engine of government operations, necessary for delivering public goods to citizens.

The Role of Civil Service in Governance

Tinubu further elaborated on the essential role of the civil service, describing it as the locomotive of government. “As politicians, we are no more than drivers of the locomotives that you provide,” he added, underscoring the importance of a disciplined and accountable civil service in ensuring effective governance.
