Labour Issues Final Ultimatum to Abia Government, Begins Indefinite Strike July 15

The organized labour in Abia State has issued a final ultimatum to the state government over the non-payment of the N30,000 minimum wage and the N35,000 palliative award. Despite promises from Governor Alex Otti to implement new wages following federal negotiations, labour leaders have set a strike date.

In a letter dated July 8, 2024, and signed by NLC Chairman Okoro Ogbonnaya and TUC Chairman Enogwe Ihechi, the organized labour announced the commencement of an indefinite strike starting Monday, July 15, 2024. The letter emphasized that previous negotiations had failed, leading to the decision to strike in line with national directives.

The letter stated: “Organized labour hereby issues this final seven (7) days ultimatum with effect from the day of receipt of this letter and states unequivocally, that at the expiration of this ultimatum, on Sunday 00hr, there shall be no further communication with the government. Rather, the entire workforce of Abia State will proceed on indefinite strike beginning from Monday, 15th July, 2024.”
