The Kogi State Government has issued a stern warning to demolish properties, including houses and hotels, occupied by internet fraudsters, commonly known as "Yahoo Boys."
Government’s Firm Stance Against Internet Fraud
Retired Commander Jerry Omodara, the State
Security Adviser, delivered this warning during the "State of Kogi"
radio program on Monday, monitored by DAILY POST in Lokoja. He emphasized the
government's commitment to eradicating internet fraud in the state and called
for public cooperation in providing information to facilitate the arrest of
these criminals.
Targeting Fraudulent Activities
Omodara announced that security agencies
would soon target hotels used by Yahoo Boys for their illicit activities.
"Appropriate sanctions will be imposed on those harboring
fraudsters," he stated, warning landlords against renting their properties
to internet fraudsters. Such properties, he noted, would face demolition.
Collaboration with Security Agencies
The government, in collaboration with
security agencies, has identified properties built with proceeds from criminal
activities. These structures will be demolished, and actions will be taken
against individuals providing shelter to criminals.
Strict Measures Against Armed Criminals
Omodara also disclosed that security
agencies and local hunters have been directed to arrest or neutralize anyone
found carrying arms in the forests. He commended Kogi State Governor Ahmed
Usman Ododo for his efforts in combating insecurity and called on companies and
affluent individuals to contribute to the State Security Trust Fund.
Rise in Internet Fraud Activities
The surge in internet fraud activities in
Kogi State has prompted action from the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC), which has already arrested numerous offenders earlier this
year.
