Trump’s Immigration Plan: Automatic Green Cards for Graduates
Donald
Trump, the 45th President of the United States, has announced a significant
shift in his immigration policy. If re-elected, Trump plans to grant automatic
Permanent Resident permits, commonly known as Green Cards, to Nigerian and
other international students who graduate from U.S. colleges. This proposal was
outlined in his recent immigration plan titled ‘Build America Visa.’
A Shift in Immigration Policy
Known
for his conservative immigration stance, Trump’s new proposal marks a potential
change in how the U.S. manages immigration, specifically in retaining
international talent. The United States currently grants 1.1 million permanent
legal resident visas annually.
Promoting American Values and Attracting Talent
Trump
emphasized the need for a legal immigration system that protects American
wages, promotes American values, and attracts the best and brightest from
around the world. "What I would like is a new legal immigration system that
protects American wages, promotes American values, and attracts the best and
brightest from all around the world," Trump stated.
Green Cards Linked to Graduation
Trump
proposed that graduates from U.S. colleges should receive Green Cards
automatically as part of their diploma. This policy would apply to graduates
from all types of U.S. colleges and those with doctorate degrees. "What I
will do is you graduate from college, I think you should get automatically as
part of your diploma a Green Card to be able to stay in this country,"
Trump added.
2024 Presidential Election
Trump is expected to face incumbent President Joe Biden, a Democrat, in the upcoming U.S. presidential election on November 5, 2024.
