Call for Part-Time Legislature

Prof. Nneoyi Egbe, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Calabar, urges Nigeria to adopt a part-time legislature to curb financial wastage and corruption. He believes this change will enhance credibility and allow legislators to engage in private work while saving the nation's funds. He argues that hefty payments to lawmakers, many of whom do not sponsor bills, should be reduced. A part-time system, with legislators on minimum wage and paid sitting allowances, could free up significant resources for other economic needs.

True Federalism and Resource Control

Egbe also advocates for true federalism, where states control their resources, aligning development with local production. He suggests the federal government focus on foreign affairs and defense, leaving primary education and other local issues to states and local governments. This restructuring would reduce the central government's financial attraction, thereby decreasing political conflicts over resources.

Objective Legislative Quality

Egbe emphasizes the need for laws that benefit the general populace, criticizing self-centered legislation. He calls for a shift in mindset to prioritize the nation's future over individual or group interests. By restructuring governance at all levels, Egbe believes Nigeria can achieve more equitable and effective management of resources.
