The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced the full restoration of the national power grid following a partial collapse on Saturday. Ndidi Mbah, TCN Public Affairs General Manager, explained that the grid disturbance occurred at approximately 15:09 hrs on July 6, 2024. This marks the third partial grid disturbance and the first total disturbance this year.
Cause of
the Collapse
Mbah
stated that the collapse was likely triggered by the unexpected tripping of
three units at a power-generating station, which suddenly removed 313MW from
the grid, causing system instability. The system operator responded by
isolating a section of the grid, including the Ibom Power Station, to maintain
power supply to specific areas while restoring the affected part of the grid by
21:57 hrs the same day.
Consumer
Reactions and Concerns
Electricity
consumers have expressed frustration over the recurring grid collapses,
particularly following a recent tariff increase approved by the Nigerian
Electricity Regulatory Commission. Princewill Okorie, Executive Director of the
Electricity Consumer Protection Advocacy Centre, criticized the inefficiency in
the power sector despite higher tariffs, calling for better management and
transparency in the use of funds.
Calls for
Accountability and Restructuring
Adetayo
Adegbemle, Executive Director of PowerUp Nigeria, emphasized the need for
accountability within the electricity value chain. He suggested that leadership
changes might drive more effective collaboration and prevent future grid
collapses. Adegbemle highlighted the importance of aligning the value chain,
referencing the Siemens deal aimed at improving the sector.
Regional
Impact
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company confirmed that its TCN stations were out of supply, affecting customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states.
