The Academic Staff
Union of Universities (ASUU) in the Kano zone has urged the Federal Government
to address all unresolved issues in the agreements and memoranda signed with
the union to ensure industrial harmony in Nigeria.
During a news
briefing on Thursday in Kano, Abdulqadir Muhammad, the Zonal Coordinator,
highlighted the need for the government to fulfill its commitments. The
briefing followed a zonal meeting involving seven universities in the region.
Muhammad outlined
several critical issues, including:
- Renegotiation of
the 2009 Federal Government-ASUU agreement
- Adequate funding
for the revitalization of public universities to achieve global standards
- Respect for
university autonomy
He emphasized that
the failure to sign the renegotiated agreement has caused widespread
dissatisfaction and declining morale among ASUU members, leading to brain
drain.
"ASUU Kano
zone calls on the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to respect the
provisions of the International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions, to which
Nigeria is a signatory," Muhammad stated.
Additionally, he
called for the release of funds for salary arrears, Earned Academic Allowances
(EAA), and withheld salaries.
On the issue of
university autonomy, the union demanded that the Kano State Government
immediately reinstate the arbitrarily dissolved governing councils of the two
state-owned universities.
ASUU Kano zone also
urged state governments to follow the presidential directive, based on a court
ruling, to exempt tertiary institutions from the Integrated Payroll and
Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and cease the illegal enrollment of their
members into related platforms.
These steps, ASUU
believes, are crucial for ensuring the effective functioning and global
competitiveness of Nigerian universities.
