French President Emmanuel Macron has urged
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to allow the Palestinian Authority to
govern the Gaza Strip. This call was made during phone talks on Tuesday,
according to the French presidential office.
Macron endorsed a proposal for a Gaza
ceasefire and hostage release deal put forward by U.S. President Joe Biden. He
emphasized that this deal should pave the way for a two-state solution, which
he believes is the only viable option to provide Israel with necessary security
guarantees while addressing the legitimate aspirations of Palestinians.
"Gaza must be an integral part of a
future Palestinian state, and a reformed and reinforced Palestinian Authority,
with the help of the international community, should ensure its
governance," Macron stated.
President Biden's proposed roadmap, introduced last Friday, aims to boost mediation efforts after nearly eight months of conflict. The plan includes a three-stage process: an initial six-week phase involving Israeli forces' withdrawal from populated Gaza areas and a hostage-prisoner exchange, followed by negotiations for a lasting ceasefire. The final phase would focus on rebuilding Gaza without the militant group Hamas in power.
