Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has expressed deep concerns over the escalating insecurity in Nigeria. He has also called for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, other freedom fighters, and any #EndSARS protesters still being held.

Urgent Call for Enhanced Security Measures

Speaking to journalists in Onitsha, Obi emphasized the critical need for improved security measures across the country. He warned that without urgent action, Nigeria risks becoming a failed state.

“The primary duty of the government is to ensure the security of lives and property. No one can live in an insecure environment,” Obi stated. “The ongoing killings, abductions, and other criminal activities have made Nigeria one of the most insecure places on earth. This situation is leading us towards a failed state.”

Obi acknowledged the government’s efforts so far but stressed the necessity for all leaders to unite in tackling insecurity, particularly in the South-East region. He urged South-East governors to collaborate more closely to address these challenges.

Advocacy for Economic Collaboration in the South-East

Obi also called for enhanced economic cooperation among South-East governors. “We need to see South-East governors working together and involving other groups in the zone to drive economic development,” he added.

Demand for Release of Nnamdi Kanu and Other Detainees

Addressing the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, Obi argued, “There is no justification for his continued detention, especially since the courts have granted him bail. The government must respect the rule of law.”

Obi also urged the release of all individuals detained due to protests, including #EndSARS protesters and those held for exercising their freedom of speech. “We are a democratic country, and people have the right to express themselves freely and protest peacefully. The government must listen to the grievances of its citizens,” he asserted.

Stance on Peaceful Protests

While condemning violent protests and the destruction of government property, Obi supported peaceful protests. “Peaceful protest is a constitutional right. It must be for a legitimate reason and properly articulated,” he said.

Focus on Addressing Hunger and Poverty

When asked about joining other politicians to form a mega party to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC), Obi dismissed such plans. He emphasized his focus on addressing pressing issues affecting Nigerians, such as hunger and poverty.

“Our priority should be reducing food prices, improving living conditions, and lifting people out of poverty. If forming a mega party will achieve these goals, then I support it. But if it is merely for power without addressing these issues, I am not interested,” Obi concluded.
