President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu |
President Bola Tinubu has called on both citizens and leaders to renew their commitment to the principles of inclusivity, accountability, and transparency to ensure a lasting democracy in Nigeria. Speaking during the 2024 Democracy Day Lecture at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Tinubu emphasized the need for every Nigerian to play a role in building a nation where every voice is heard and every potential is realized.
A Call to Build a Unified Nation
President Tinubu highlighted the importance
of giving every Nigerian, regardless of background, a chance to contribute to
the nation's shared destiny. He noted that the country’s 25 years of
uninterrupted democracy stand as a testament to the enduring sacrifices of many
patriots.
"After 25 years of uninterrupted
democracy, it is time for all Nigerians to partake in building a nation where
every voice is heard, every potential is realized, and every citizen is
empowered to contribute to the collective good," Tinubu stated.
Reflecting on Democratic Progress
Represented by Vice President Kashim
Shettima, Tinubu reflected on the triumphs and trials of Nigeria’s democratic
journey, underscoring the need to nurture and closely watch over democracy. He
urged a renewed commitment to democratic values to ensure that democracy not
only endures but flourishes for future generations.
"Our progress has been marked by both
triumphs and trials, each serving as a reminder of the preciousness of our
democratic principles. Let us recommit to the values of inclusivity,
accountability, and transparency," Tinubu said.
Celebrating and Sustaining Democracy
As Nigeria celebrated Democracy Day, leaders and groups, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and the International Press Centre (IPC), reflected on the nation's democratic journey since June 12. The federal government also declared the day a public holiday, while the Department of State Services (DSS) cautioned against planned protests.
Honoring Sacrifices and Inspiring Future Generations
President Tinubu acknowledged the
sacrifices made by past generations to secure democracy and emphasized the
importance of honoring their labor by engaging young and competent Nigerians in
building a resilient future. He called for an environment where every Nigerian
has the opportunity to contribute to the nation's shared destiny.
"Our democratic experience, despite the lows and highs, is a testament to our aspiration to build a nation that serves the interests of all. We are here because the alternative is a descent into dystopia," Tinubu noted.
Highlighting Heroes of Democracy
Secretary to the Government of the
Federation, Senator George Akume, paid tribute to the heroes and heroines who
fought for democracy, acknowledging their sacrifices, including those who paid
the ultimate price. He praised the resilience of Nigerians in upholding
democratic values despite numerous challenges.
"Our democratic journey is one of optimism. Today provides an opportunity to salute the resilience of our people in believing in democracy," Akume stated.
Prioritizing Citizens' Needs
In his keynote address, former Katsina
State Governor Aminu Masari called on politicians to prioritize the needs of
the populace over their own. He emphasized that democracy is about the
government of the people, not just politicians, and urged a deeper commitment
to democratic culture.
"Democracy is about the government of the people. We need to prioritize the needs of the populace ahead of our own and become better democrats," Masari said.
Conclusion
President Tinubu's address on Democracy Day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusivity, accountability, and transparency in sustaining and strengthening Nigeria’s democracy. As the nation reflects on its democratic journey, the call to action is clear: every Nigerian must be empowered to contribute to the collective good, ensuring a resilient and prosperous future for all.
