In line with his promise to mitigate the
impact of subsidy removal and promote sustainable energy solutions, President
Bola Ahmed Tinubu will inaugurate the National Agency for Science and
Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Conversion,
Filling, Reverse Engineering, and Training Centre in Utako, Abuja. The
commissioning ceremony is scheduled for Friday, May 31, 2024.
This event marks a significant milestone
for NASENI in its commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s Renewed
Hope Agenda, focusing on sustainable energy alternatives and fostering a clean
energy ecosystem. The NASENI-Portland CNG Conversion and Training Centre,
established in partnership with Portland Gas Limited, is a state-of-the-art
facility dedicated to converting fossil fuel vehicles to CNG, a cleaner and
more cost-effective alternative.
The centre is equipped with advanced
technology and staffed by highly trained professionals to ensure efficient and
safe conversions. It aims to build local capacity in CNG technology by offering
comprehensive training programs for technicians, engineers, and other
stakeholders. This initiative promotes the adoption of green energy solutions
across Nigeria and fosters domestication of expertise in CNG systems.
Speaking about the centre, Khalil Suleiman
Halilu, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of NASENI, highlighted that the
establishment of the NASENI-Portland Gas Reverse Engineering Centre represents
a transformative moment for Nigeria’s energy sector. Halilu emphasized NASENI’s
commitment to sustainable innovation and the development of home-grown
technological and manufacturing capabilities.
“At NASENI, we are dedicated to reducing
our carbon footprint and providing affordable, eco-friendly fuel alternatives
to Nigerians,” Halilu stated. “This initiative is expected to significantly
reduce vehicular emissions, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier
environment. Additionally, the adoption of CNG will offer economic benefits by
lowering fuel costs for consumers and creating new job opportunities in
Nigeria’s green energy sector.”
NASENI invites all stakeholders, from
vehicle owners to industry professionals, to utilize the services and training
opportunities at the new centre. Halilu noted that NASENI has demonstrated
notable proficiency in automotive reverse engineering, exemplified by the
successful local assembly of CNG kits.
The CNG sequential kit assembled by
NASENI’s team includes essential components such as a pressure regulator,
petrol solenoid valve with manual override switch, on-off valve and refuelling
connector, control module/change-over switch, CNG level indicator (LED
indicator), gas air mixer, CNG cylinder with valve, vapour bag and bracket,
petrol hose, low-pressure gas hose, ignition advance processor, wire harness,
and NRV in petrol return line.
Regarding affordability, Halilu assured
that efforts are ongoing to make these services accessible following the
subsidy removal. The initiative is also expected to create substantial job
opportunities, contributing to the nation’s economic value. The centre will
operate under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, ensuring that NASENI is
not solely dependent on government funding.
