June 12: Current Challenges Being Exploited to Undermine Democracy — Tinubu

Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has raised concerns about attempts by some individuals to exploit Nigeria’s current economic challenges to undermine and destroy democracy. Despite these efforts, he vowed to preserve democracy and protect the rights, freedoms, and liberties of all Nigerians.

Commitment to Democracy and Labour Relations

In his nationwide broadcast on Democracy Day, Tinubu assured that the Federal Government has engaged in good faith negotiations with organized labor on a new national minimum wage. He pledged to soon send an executive bill to the National Assembly to formalize these agreements into law for the next five years or less.

Remembering the Struggle for Democracy

Reflecting on the significance of Democracy Day, President Tinubu honored those who sacrificed their lives for Nigeria’s democratic government, established about 25 years ago. He emphasized the crucial decision made then to choose democracy over dictatorship and urged the nation to continue on that path.

Warning Against Anti-Democratic Forces

The President highlighted the ongoing struggle against those who seek to exploit current difficulties to gain control and dominance, undermining democracy in the process. He stressed the importance of resisting these forces to protect the democratic achievements made so far.

The Essence of Democracy Day

Tinubu reminded Nigerians that democracy is a living, breathing reality, not just a historic fact. He stated that while it is important to honor past sacrifices, the focus should also be on the continuous effort to uphold and strengthen democratic values.

Presidential Pledge

“As president of this nation, I am morally and constitutionally bound to preserve this precious form of governance,” Tinubu declared. He vowed to protect the rights, freedoms, and liberties of all citizens and to cement democracy as the nation’s way of life.

The Ongoing Challenge

Tinubu acknowledged that the real test is not just overcoming past misfortunes and dictatorship but also maintaining vigilance against the potential resurgence of despotism. He called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in their commitment to democracy.
