Former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), emphasized the importance of constant nurturing and vigilance to sustain democracy in Nigeria. Represented by Gen. Adamu Jidda at the second edition of ThisNigeria Newspaper Gold Prize and Annual Lecture Awards in Abuja, Abubakar highlighted critical areas requiring collective attention, including electoral integrity, human rights, economic development, and social justice.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey since 1999, Abubakar highlighted the nation’s dedication to the principles of freedom, justice, and equality. He urged Nigerians to recognize the crucial role of the media in this journey, noting that the press has been a watchdog of democracy, holding leaders accountable and providing a platform for diverse voices.
