Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju has emphasized that only the residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) can decide who becomes their senator in 2027, countering Minister Nyesom Wike's claim of influence. Adeyanju pointed out that FCT is not like Rivers State, where election outcomes are allegedly manipulated with force.

Context of the Dispute

This statement comes amidst a conflict between Wike and FCT Senator Ireti Kingibe. Kingibe criticized Wike for focusing solely on infrastructural projects, neglecting the actual needs of FCT residents. In response, Wike warned that Kingibe would not be re-elected in 2027.

Adeyanju's Response

Adeyanju reacted to Wike's threat by reminding him that even incumbent presidents have been defeated in FCT elections. He argued that Wike's confidence in controlling the election outcome is misplaced.

Posting on X, Adeyanju wrote:

"Only the people of FCT can decide who becomes Senator in 2027, not Wike. The arrogance of power is what will make Wike think he can decide for the people. FCT is not Rivers, where people write results and shoot guns. Even incumbent presidents get defeated in the FCT. I know these folks have 100% control of INEC and other rigging mechanisms, but the arrogance is truly uncalled for. Nigerian politicians are like power drunk Nigerian celebrities and pastors who can boast openly about getting the police to lock you up, and they will eventually do it."
