A fresh wave of insecurity has gripped Anambra State, intensifying concerns among residents and accusations against Governor Chukwuma Soludo and the new Commissioner of Police, CP Enaghe Obono Itam, for their perceived inadequacy in addressing the crisis. The situation worsened following the retirement of the former Commissioner of Police, Mr. Aderemi Adeoye, who was known for his firm stance against cultism and other crimes.
Cult-Related
Killings Surge
In
just one week, at least eight youths have been killed in cult-related violence.
On July 7th, a notorious date for cult celebrations, despite police warnings,
three individuals were murdered in the state capital, Awka. Witnesses reported
incidents of gunmen driving through neighborhoods and executing victims in
broad daylight, causing panic and fear among residents.
Kidnappings
on the Rise
Kidnapping
has also surged, with multiple incidents reported in a single day. Notably,
gunmen in a black Sienna vehicle abducted several individuals at gunpoint,
including a lone driver of a Lexus 350 SUV near Nnamdi Azikiwe University's
back gate. These kidnappings have added to the atmosphere of fear and
lawlessness in the state.
Public
Outcry and Criticism
Residents
and public figures have voiced their frustration and fear. Former governorship
candidate Valentine Ozigbo criticized Governor Soludo for failing to ensure
security, noting that the state has witnessed numerous abductions and killings.
Similarly, Labour Party chieftain Oseloka Obaze lamented the deteriorating
security situation, calling for urgent action to address the crisis.
Calls for
Immediate Action
Prominent
voices in the state are urging Governor Soludo to utilize security funds
effectively to combat the growing insecurity. Tony Okafor emphasized the need
for decisive action, including bolstering law enforcement presence, enhancing
intelligence gathering, and supporting community policing initiatives. The call
for proactive measures reflects the urgency felt by the residents who are
desperate for safety and stability.
Police
Response
The
state police command confirmed some of the kidnapping incidents but remained
silent on the cult killings. The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam,
stated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators and rescue the
kidnapped victims. However, the effectiveness of these efforts remains to be
seen as the crime wave continues unabated.
Conclusion
The escalating insecurity in Anambra State highlights the need for immediate and effective intervention from both the government and law enforcement agencies. With residents living in constant fear, restoring peace and order is imperative to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens. Governor Soludo and the new Commissioner of Police face a critical test of leadership as they navigate this challenging period.
