Children’s Day: NHRC Raises Concerns Over Rising Cases of Child Rights Violations

In a statement commemorating the 2024 Children’s Day, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has raised alarm over the increasing cases of child rights violations across Nigeria. Tony Ojukwu, Executive Secretary of the NHRC, emphasized the urgent need for a renewed societal commitment to protect and ensure the fundamental rights of children.

Signed by Obinna Nwakonye, Director of Corporate Affairs and External Relations at the NHRC, the statement highlighted that children are among the most vulnerable in society. Ojukwu pointed out that the growing number of reported violations not only threatens the immediate well-being of children but also compromises their future potential and the overall health and security of society.

“These violations not only threaten their immediate well-being but also compromise their future potentials and the overall health and security of our society. It is therefore imperative that we act decisively and with urgency to address this menace,” Ojukwu said.

Despite the passage of the Child Rights Act in several states, Ojukwu stressed the need for stronger implementation to protect children from abuse, exploitation, and neglect. He called on governments to develop comprehensive support systems for children in distress, including accessible and well-resourced child protection services, helplines, and shelters.

Ojukwu also emphasized the importance of training professionals in education, social welfare, healthcare, and law enforcement to effectively identify and respond to child rights violations. He highlighted education as key to raising awareness about children’s rights among parents, caregivers, educators, and children themselves, empowering them to understand and assert their rights.

He advocated for establishing robust mechanisms for monitoring, reporting, and addressing violations of children’s rights to ensure accountability at all levels and justice for perpetrators.

Ojukwu concluded by noting that protecting children’s rights is not only a legal obligation but a moral imperative essential for securing the country’s future. “As we celebrate Children’s Day 2024, let us reaffirm our commitment to creating a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment for every child,” he added.
