Abike Dabiri-Erewa Visits Rescued Nigerian Girls in Ghana

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), recently visited ten Nigerian girls who were trafficked to Ghana under the false pretense of being employed as "sales girls." The NiDCOM boss condemned the human trafficking incident following her intervention in the rescue operation.


Details of the Rescue Operation

According to a statement from Gabriel Odu of NiDCOM's Public Relations Department, the ten girls, aged 15 to 18, were rescued after the suspect responsible for their trafficking was arrested and taken into security custody. The victims, eight from Imo State and two from Plateau State, were freed through the collaborative efforts of the Nigerians in the Diaspora Organisation in Ghana.


Dabiri-Erewa’s Visit and Commendations 

During her visit to Ghana, Dabiri-Erewa met with the rescued girls and praised the efforts of Chief Calistus Elozieuwa, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation in Ghana, and his team. She also acknowledged the support from various stakeholders, including representatives from the Imo State Government, the Eze Igbo of Ghana, and Acting Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, Amb. Adeoye Ifedayo.

 

Call to Action Against Human Trafficking 

Dabiri-Erewa emphasized the urgent need to eradicate human trafficking in Nigeria, declaring, "We must declare a war against human traffickers." She urged parents to closely monitor their children’s activities and whereabouts, and called for collective efforts to identify and prosecute traffickers. The rescued girls will be handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for counseling and rehabilitation before being returned to their home states.

 

Support and Future Actions 

Amb. Adeoye Ifedayo praised NIDO in Ghana for their prompt response and stressed the importance of halting human trafficking. Imo State Deputy Speaker Amara Iwuanyanwu and Commissioner for Women Affairs Nkechinyere Ugwu reaffirmed their commitment to the welfare of the rescued girls. The Plateau State Government also pledged full support for the girls’ rehabilitation.


Collaboration with Ghanaian Authorities 

The delegation held discussions with senior members of the Ghanaian Police, who assured their cooperation in the fight against human trafficking. This collaborative effort highlights the importance of international cooperation in tackling such crimes.
