The meeting between President Bola Tinubu and labour union leaders on Thursday to finalize the minimum wage agreement has been adjourned until next week. The discussions, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, lasted about an hour but did not reach a conclusive agreement.
Nigeria
Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, clarified that the meeting was
more of a discussion than a negotiation. He emphasized that the union and the
President agreed to reconvene next week to delve deeper into the issues at
hand.
Ajaero
mentioned that the current demands of N250,000 by the NLC and the Federal
Government’s offer of N62,000 remain unchanged until further discussions.
Trade
Union Congress (TUC) President, Comrade Osifo, highlighted that they presented
the economic challenges faced by Nigerians, including the devaluation of the
naira and its impact on the cost of living. He stressed that they discussed
these issues directly with President Tinubu, aiming to provide a comprehensive
view of the economic pressures on Nigerians.
Both labour leaders expressed hope for productive negotiations in the next meeting, with the goal of reaching a mutually beneficial agreement on the minimum wage.
